Mychal Martin, a former graduate of the General Daniel “Chappie” James Flight Academy, has been hired by SkyWest Airlines.
“The power of excellence is over - whelming,” said the late General James, Jr. “It is always in demand and nobody cares about its color.” The General Daniel “Chappie” James Flight Academy was founded in 1996 by Craig S. Abernathy, Clifton W. Curtis, Jr., Michael J. Fowlkes and Michael E. Griffin, four Pensacola Naval Flight Instructors who desired to give back to the community. Their mission is to build confidence in disadvantaged youth, particularly African American teens, by using aviation to learn discipline and motivation.
“It wasn’t until June 1998, I had the opportunity to not only be part of the Flight Academy but see and be around highly accomplished black aviators as a benchmark to accomplish my dream as an aviator,” Martin said.
Martin attended the academy starting at age 11 and climbed through the academy to become a peer mentor and member of junior staff. After graduating college, Martin joined the United States Navy where he served as a Naval Flight Officer. Following his service, Martin became a civilian flight instructor and worked to accumulate his flight hours and continue his aviation career.
“Ever since that memorable year, I have owed a tremendous debt of gratitude to the academy staff and the example of General James,” said Martin. “I wouldn’t be where I am without the support, guidance and leadership of the Academy.”
Martin’s career exemplifies and gives evidence to how true General James’s words are. The sky’s the limit for Martin as his career is soaring to bold, new heights.
